Might the Anti Smoking Law in Britain Force Bingo Players On to the Internet?
A lot has been talked in the papers just a while ago regarding the bingo industry being hit because of the cigarette ban in Britain. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive aid to help keep the businesses from going bankrupt. But does the internet version of this classic game offer a salvation, or will it in no way compare to its land based kin?
Bingo has been an age old game usually played by the "blue haired" generation. Although the game recently had witnessed a recent resurgence in popularity with younger members of society opting to go to the bingo parlors instead of the clubs on a Saturday night. This is all about to change with the enacting of the smoking ban all over England and Wales.
Players will no longer be able to smoke whilst marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public location will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most favored locations where many people like to smoke.
The results of the anti smoking law can already be observed in Scotland where cigarettes are already not allowed in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plunged and the industry is literally struggling for to stay alive. But where did all the players go? Obviously they haven’t cast aside this enduring game?
The answer is online. Players are now realizing that they can enjoy bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a cocktail and cig and still enjoy huge jackpots. This is a recent development and has happened bordering on perfect with the ban on smoking.
Of course gambling on on the internet could never replace the collective portion of heading over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of people the rules have left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with little option.
