Will the Cigarette Ban in England Force Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Net?
A lot has been stated in the press recently concerning the bingo industry singing the blues as a consequence of the anti cigarette law in the UK. Things have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded massive tax cuts to assist in keeping the industry alive. But can the online version of this traditional game offer a salvation, or will it never compare to its bricks and mortar opposite?
Bingo is an classic game historically played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game recently had undergone a recent resurgence in acceptance with younger members of society deciding to visit the bingo halls rather than the clubs on a Saturday night. This is all about to change with the introduction of the cigarette ban around England and Wales.
No longer will enthusiasts be permitted to smoke at the same time marking off their numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 every public place will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most common places where folks like to puff on cigarettes.
The results of the smoking ban can already be observed in Scotland where cigarettes are already illegal in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plunged and the industry is absolutely struggling for to stay alive. But where have all the players gone? Obviously they have not forgotten this ancient game?
The answer is online. People are now realizing that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a drink and fag and in the end, enjoy big prizes. This is a recent development and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.
Of course playing online will never replace the collective part of heading over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of people the law has left many bingo enthusiasts with no alternative.
