Can the Smoking Ban in England Take Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Internet?
An abundance has been written in the press not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt because of the cigarette ban in Britain. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded big aid to help keep the businesses from going bankrupt. But does the internet version of this classic game present a reprieve, or will it in no way compare to its bricks and mortar peer?
Bingo has been an classic game generally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game lately had experienced a recent increase in appeal with younger men and women deciding to go to the bingo halls instead of the discos on a Saturday night. This is all about to be reversed with the legislating of the anti smoking law all over UK.
Players will no longer be allowed to smoke at the same time marking off their numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 all public places will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most favorite areas where people enjoy smoking.
The results of the smoking ban can already be observed in Scotland where smoking is already illegal in the bingo parlors. Players have dropped and the business is literally fighting for its life. But where did the players go? Of course they have not abandoned this familiar game?
The answer is on the web. People realize that they can play bingo using their computer while enjoying a beverage and cigarette and still have a chance at big prizes. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course betting on on the net could never replace the social aspect of heading down to the bingo hall, but for a group of men and women the governing edicts have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with little choice.
