Will the Anti Cigarette Law in the UK Take Bingo Enthusiasts Online?

[ English ]

A lot has been reported in the papers recently regarding the bingo industry struggling as a consequence of the anti cigarette law in Britain. Conditions have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for huge tax cuts to assist in keeping the businesses afloat. But will the net version of this traditional game present a reprieve, or might it in no way compare to its real life relative?

Bingo is an ancient game historically enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game of late had experienced a recent return in popularity with younger men and women deciding to hit the bingo halls instead of the clubs on a Saturday night. This is all about to change with the legislating of the anti smoking law throughout England and Wales.

Players will no longer be allowed to smoke whilst marking off their numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 every public place will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favored locations where people enjoy smoking.

The effects of the cigarette ban can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already illegal in the bingo parlours. Numbers have dropped and the industry is absolutely struggling for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Certainly they have not abandoned this classic game?

The answer is on the web. Gamblers realize that they can participate in bingo from their computer while enjoying a beverage and smoke and in the end, have a chance at monstrous jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself almost perfectly with the ban on smoking.

Of course gambling on on the web is unlikely to replace the social aspect of heading down to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of players the governing edicts have left a good many bingo players with no choice.
